Founded in 1978, Great American Lines, Inc. (GALI) has been a trusted leader in global marine transportation for over four decades. Specializing in the ocean carriage of automobiles, GALI delivers safe, efficient, and reliable shipping solutions for automotive manufacturers and cargo partners worldwide.

Our Legacy

GALI was established through the vision of two entrepreneurs determined to strengthen trade between Japan and the United States. With extensive experience in refrigerated cargo handling, the company launched its first vessel, the M/V Sunbelt Dixie, in 1978. The vessel pioneered a “two-way trade” model—transporting automobiles to the United States and returning to Japan with refrigerated cargo. This approach created a more efficient, economical, and environmentally responsible shipping model.
When the M/V Sunbelt Spirit joined the fleet in 2002, GALI continued to expand its presence in trans-Pacific trade, operating with the same precision, safety, and commitment to customer care that defined its beginnings. Over the course of more than 40 years, GALI vessels have carried hundreds of thousands of Toyota and Lexus vehicles to destinations across the U.S. and Canada.

Capt. Peter Johansen
President & COO

Pete has experience as a licensed Deck Officer, having sailed on chemical and product tankers as well as container ships. He joined GALI in 1996 after serving as a Marine Superintendent with Sea-Land Services and as a U.S. Naval Reserve Captain during Operation Iraqi Freedom.
Todd McCleary
Vice President

Todd has a BS degree in Nautical Science/Marine Transportation from the US Merchant Marine Academy and has been working in operations for GALI and related companies since 1985.
